Abstract
An attempt has been made to investigate bicchemical properites and cholera enterotoxin(CT) gene of Vibrio choloerae 01 isolates during cholera epidemic in Korea 1991. 157 isolates of 222 samples were identified as V. cholerae 01 and showed
typical
charactdristics for biolchemical reactions and biotype El-Tor, but only one isolate biotype El-Tor and serotype Inaba. Geographically, the highest isolation rate were showed in Chung-Nam(47.9%) and followed in Kyung-Nam(19.8%) and
Chun-Buk(17.8%),
especially seven V. cholerae 01 strains wee isolated from Chun-Buk environments. The male group(59.0%) had a higher detection rate than the female(41.0%) and over 50's age group had the highest rate of 52.9%. In CT test, overall CT positive
average
rate
of the isolates were 84.7%, isolates from Chun-Nam had higher CT positive rate (93.3%) than Chun-Buk(89.3%) and Kyung-Nam(67.6%), also all of the environmental isolates showed positive in CT of CT gene. Among 25 examined isolates, 17 CT positive
isolates and CT gene and 8 CT negative isolates had not. All of the environmental isolates had showed positive in CT test as well as CT gene by PCR. It can be suggested that the V. cholerae 01 isolates from 1991 epidemic in Korea seems to have
not
silent CT gene.
